Finishing & Post-Processing

A great print is just the beginning. Our finishing and post-processing services transform raw prints into polished, production-ready parts that look and perform exactly the way they should.

What is Finishing & Post-Processing?

Post-processing is what separates a good part from a great one. It's the set of techniques applied after printing to enhance appearance, strength, surface quality, and functionality. From sanding and priming to painting and coating, our finishing services ensure every part meets the highest standard — whether it's headed to a boardroom presentation or a production line.

When Do You Need Post Processing?

Finishing services are ideal for any part where raw print quality isn't enough. Consumer products that need a market-ready appearance, prototypes being presented to investors or clients, functional parts requiring smooth mating surfaces, or full color models that need that extra level of realism. If it needs to look like a finished product — we get it there.

What We Offer

We provide a full range of post-processing capabilities. Every finish is applied by hand with attention to detail — because how your part looks is just as important as how it's built.

  • Sanding & surface smoothing
  • Primer & paint application
  • Custom color matching
  • Clear & protective coating
  • Support removal & cleanup
  • UV sealing for full color models
  • Assembly of multi-part builds

Finishing & Post-Processing FAQs

Everything you need to know about our finishing services.

Yes. We offer custom color matching for paint applications. If you have a Pantone reference, a hex code, a RAL number, or a physical sample you need us to match, share it with your order and we'll work to achieve it. For brand-critical applications where color accuracy is essential, we recommend requesting a test sample before committing to a full production run.

Sanding removes layer lines and support marks, bringing the surface closer to a smooth, injection-molded appearance. Primer fills remaining micro-texture and provides a uniform base for paint. The final result depends on the process and material — SLA parts respond especially well to finishing and can reach a near-flawless surface. FDM parts can be brought to a production-quality finish with more prep work. We'll set realistic expectations for your specific part before we start.

Yes. We apply clear and protective coatings to extend part life, add gloss or matte finish, protect painted surfaces from handling and wear, and provide UV resistance for parts that will be displayed or used in light-exposed environments. For full color 3D printed parts, UV sealing is strongly recommended to prevent color degradation over time.

Yes, though the approach differs by process. SLA parts have the smoothest as-printed surface and respond best to light finishing for a near-flawless result. FDM parts have more pronounced layer lines and may require more prep to reach the same finish level. Full color parts require UV sealing to protect the color layer and can also be clear coated for added durability. We tailor the finishing workflow to the process and material your part was printed in.

In some cases, yes. Light sanding of mating surfaces or assembly interfaces can improve fitment on parts where the as-printed tolerance is slightly off. For parts requiring threaded connections, we can install heat-set inserts post-print for reliable, durable fastening that outperforms printed threads. If you have specific functional requirements beyond cosmetic finish, let us know and we'll discuss what's achievable.

Yes. We offer assembly services for multi-component builds — bonding, fastening, or press-fitting parts together into a complete deliverable. This is common for larger models that are printed in sections, presentation assemblies, and architectural or product models where the final piece needs to arrive ready to use or display, not as a kit of parts.

Finishing should be specified when you place your order. Some finishing steps — particularly priming, painting, and assembly — need to be planned into the production schedule alongside the print itself. If you're unsure what level of finish your part needs, describe the end use (client presentation, trade show, production line, etc.) and we'll recommend the right level of post-processing.

Basic support removal and cleanup is included with every print. All other finishing services — sanding, priming, painting, coating, color matching, and assembly — are quoted separately based on the scope of work. Part complexity, surface area, number of colors, and assembly requirements all factor into finishing cost. We provide a clear breakdown before the job starts so you know exactly what you're getting.

Every part is finished by hand by the same technician or team for a given order, using consistent materials and documented process steps. For color-matched orders, we mix paint in batch to ensure uniformity across all pieces. If you're ordering the same finished part multiple times across separate runs, keep your color and finish specs documented — we'll reference them on repeat orders.

We review every finished part before it ships and won't send something we wouldn't be proud of. If there's a quality issue on delivery, contact us directly and we'll make it right. For high-stakes orders — client presentations, investor samples, trade show pieces — we recommend requesting a single finished sample for approval before we run the full quantity.
